We visited a tent city that is home to over 50,000 people. We brought about 300 whistles that someone had donated, so as the community gathered for a worship service that night, we passed out the whistles to the women in the congregation. Their pastor explained that if they are ever in danger of violence or abuse, they must blow the whistle as loud as they can so that someone can come to help. And he also addressed the men in the crowd, saying that it is their responsibility to come to the women’s rescue. The looks of gratitude and relief on the women’s faces were absolutely priceless.
