Over the past several years, Zimbabwe has experienced an economic collapse that left the entire country without food in 2008. Ridiculous inflation resulted in Zimbabwean dollars being completely worthless, and the unemployment rate skyrocketed to 91%. Now, in 2010, there is food back in the country and they have officially converted to US currency. But when we visited in October, we realized that Zimbabwe is still suffering quite a bit. Most Zimbabweans are still jobless, so they are unable to buy food or pay for their children’s school fees. The water crisis has also gotten worse, with places going as long as 30 days without clean running water. We visited Musha Wevana children’s home, where the children were decorating signs for a march they had organized to raise money for a water well. It was humbling and heart breaking to see these kids doing whatever they could to help ensure they’ll have clean water to drink and bathe.
